• Warehousing and Stores

Warehousing and stores, as defined here, are facilities that provide a proper environment for the purpose of storing goods and materials that require protection from the elements.

Warehouses must be designed to accommodate the loads of the materials to be stored, the associated handling equipment, the receiving and shipping operations and associated transport as well as the needs of the operating personnel. The design of the warehouse space should be planned to best accommodate business service requirements and the products to be stored/handled.

Ventilation is an important consideration in the design of warehousing and stores, the principal issues being:

  • Contaminant source control (indoors from people, materials and machinery and outdoors from industrial or vehicular sources)
  • Providing the appropriate level of fresh air ventilation
  • Filtration of air to remove particulate and other contaminants
  • Heat de-stratification during the winter months

Warehousing and stores achieve good ventilation by ensuring fans provide the right amount of fresh outdoor air is brought into the warehouse, with a comparable volume of air being extracted. This is normally achieved using wall mounted extract fans where the air intake openings are located directly opposite on the other side of the warehouse. Equally, extract fans can also be installed for roof extract.

The ventilation design should take into consideration the ability to ensure extract fans are positioned to ensure the fresh air reaches all locations in the warehouse, for e.g. there will be obstructions, such as storage racking, which will interfere with airflow rates, as well as stagnant regions, which tend to develop in comers of the warehouse space, although Eltas’ range of ceiling fans can assist in overcoming these stagnant areas in summer months.

By optimising cross-flow and eliminating the build up of stagnant air, JetVent uses an exclusive two-speed fan housed in a carefully designed, aerodynamic galvanized steel casing, which utilises internal flow elements to maximize the air velocity footprint.

This has been particularly beneficial with mezzanine floors, which build up heat in the summer months on the underside of the mezzanine, so the air movement through it creates a more comfortable and enjoyable environment for warehousing staff.
